About this data

Where does this data come from?

Our cost estimates are compiled from Numbeo, ONS household expenditure surveys, Rightmove rental indices, and Citymapper transport cost data. Figures represent a typical single adult living alone. Rents shown are for a one-bedroom flat in or near the city centre.

How is "monthly cost" calculated?

The total combines: 1-bedroom city-centre rent, monthly grocery shop for one, a public transport pass, average utility bills (gas, electric, water), and a rough allowance for eating out twice a month. We exclude personal spending, clothing, and leisure beyond eating out — these vary enormously by person.

How accurate is the salary comparison?

Your salary is converted to net monthly take-home pay using a simplified 2025 UK income tax and National Insurance calculation (single person, standard tax code, no pension deduction). This is an estimate — your actual take-home will depend on your tax code, pension contributions, student loans, and other deductions.

How often is this updated?

We review and update city cost figures quarterly, pulling from the latest ONS data releases and rental market reports. The page was last reviewed in October 2025.
